about

When I was a young boy, I was extremely fortunate to be surrounded by many interesting adults – whether they were my relatives, teachers or neighbours. There was one person in particular I found fascinating, and he was a professional photographer.

I spent some time with him at work – he used devices called “cameras” to photograph all kinds of things and people.  He then took the film he exposed, went in to a darkroom and a little while later, had some beautifully printed photographs he had just taken. Every time he did this, I was amazed and thought it was the coolest thing I had ever witnessed.  After seeing him do this a few times, I really wanted to take and develop photographs too.

That is when my journey into photography began.  It has been a long road but it has been extremely rewarding to say the least.

I have spent much time learning about all aspects of photography – plus camera technology has changed a lot in the past 40 years.  I have also been fortunate to receive training and mentoring from some of the best photographers in the world, in addition to winning a few industry awards along the way.

The most important lesson I learned was that it takes a lot more than passion and a camera to be a great photographer.  It takes vision, the ability to “see the light”, and not to forget, some technical expertise.

I absolutely love traveling and photography – and this website features a very small collection of my previously captured images and writing.  I hope you find something here of use.

If you have any questions regarding this website’s content, feel free to contact me.  I consider anyone who loves traveling and photography to be a kindred spirit.

Be well – and may you see the light.

Roël
